Sumo deadlifts are one of my favorite functional lower body exercises - they are the way you should pick up heavy objects! Here are the key points for a successful sumo deadlift: ✔️ Feet are wide with toes slightly turned out. Knees should track in line with the center of the feet. Bar should be under your shoelaces. ✔️ Hips should be between knee and shoulder height ✔️ Draw your shoulder blades gently down and in towards your spine - but avoid pulling them down and in so much that you have to arch your back or lose the strength of your upper abs ✔️ Hold the bar with your hands inside your knees ✔️ "Pretend" lift the bar before you actually lift to make sure you're prepared for the lift ✔️ Your lift is powered by your glutes and hamstrings and supported by the strength of your lower back, upper back, and abs ✔️ Lift the bar smoothly - your knees and hips will straighten nearly simultaneously with your knees straightening just a bit before your hips open. ✔️ Lower the bar in the reverse movement - keeping strength through your posture muscles (upper back) ✔️ Stand tall at the top, contracting your legs, glutes, lower back, and upper back (your posterior chain) ✔️ Maintain a straight (neutral) spine throughout. avoid rounding your back as you lift or arching as you complete the lift ✔️ Use bumper plates or a pad under your weights to avoid slamming your weights on the floor ✔️ Start with a light bar to practice (womens weight curl bar = 25 #, standard curl bar = 35 #, olympic bar = 45 # Give them a try and see how you like them!
