Engaging the core while keeping the feet moving is an essential skill. Many situations in contact sports require this ability. Anti-rotation allows you to effectively resist external forces. However, being able to resist external forces will only have minimal impact on performance if you can’t keep your feet moving. This drill improves your ability to keep your core engaged while moving explosively in the frontal plane • 🧠Effectively doing this is a neuromuscular skill. It involves separation between the lower and up body. Almost all athletes have the strength to do this. However, many lack the neuromuscular connections. These connections can only be improved through direct practice • 🥅The goal in this exercise is to keep the bar in the same place. Additionally, you want to move as smooth as possible. Essentially, it should appear as if the Pallof press has no affect on your movement •

Huge shout out to rileysummerrs (Sophomore/Big Foot High School)! 💪🏼 - Riley (GTS 16u Softball) improved her throwing velocity from 61 to 71 in six months and got her 20 yd sprint time down to 3.03 from 3.2 in 3 months. 🔥 - Not only are the awesome results she battled through TWO injuries that left her with only three limbs to train with. Riley still showed up with no excuses. 🏋🏼‍♀️Movement Thursday🏋🏼‍♀️ • • Today with glgathleticperformance we have domcrocenzi of lsabaseball performing a Yoga Push Up. • At the GLG we love to program push-up variations because they allow the shoulder blades to move freely, and you can even draw some stability from the floor. With the yoga push up you will also increase ankle, hip and thoracic spine mobility. • Start in a push up position. Lower yourself to the ground while bracing your core. Keeping the core stable will enhance the mobility benefits at both the shoulders and hips. so yesterday I did a thing... I hit a solid, legit f*cking PR. . But here it comes- wait for it- “but Z, you train all the time... of course you did.” 😑 Nah fam that’s not how it works... long story short, I wanted to share the next few pics to show what progress looks like. Not to mention, another reason I’m obsessed with OTF. They have performance trackers and check ins, you record your progress, and at the end of the day it’s just you vs you. And last night, I felt that. not to mention, got to take class with an absolute legend chelsea_alward - and s/o to the OTF Springfield crew for being so hospitable and welcoming!! ... • It can also be confirmed truefitnesspt is a wizard. I can’t even begin to explain how helpful his programming, guidance & sometimes just those weekly check ins booooooy 🤦🏽‍♀️ have been. As I approach A YEAR— an ENTIRE YEAR of training with him, the progression has just been unbelievable. I tackled the holidays just like the rest of us. He encourages me to get my OTF sessions in bc he knows they make me happy 🙃 and he understands life isn’t a straight and narrow... but don’t worry he’s not afraid to clap back when a bish needs to hear it. • be proud of your body & all it’s capable of— be proud of your strength and showcase your bodys ability.... sweat every day and show your body you’re thankful for all it has to offer. Even attempting to live up to our own expectations can be debilitating if the expectation is higher than our capabilities at that point in time...or our strength of mind. The two videos are of different athletes using isometric holds for different reasons. The first athlete has trained before and was also in-season for basketball. The second is younger and on the newer side to training.
- Here are a few reasons I like using Isometric holds in training: 1. Strength Gains (applies to both athletes) 2. It seems to help athletes learn proper position on new movement (video 2) 3. Decreased muscle soreness compared to movements involving more of an eccentric focus (a goal was to limit soreness for the athlete in video 1 due to being in-season) - As you can see, the athlete in video 1 has reps with a hold at the bottom (5 second hold), whereas the athlete in video 2 is holding the split-squat position for an entire set (he held for 20-25 seconds and we added weight for his other sets). - I have seen isometric holds really benefit athletes in a variety of ways, but they definitely have a time and place to be implemented.

Ever throw a ball while trying to not move your scapula? Sounds a bit silly huh ⚾ . Probably the most common thing I tell patients with shoulder pain, is they shouldn't keep their shoulder blades back & down when doing exercises. Let them move - even exaggerate the movement! Protract, retract, elevate, depress, rotate - allow it to move as it should 🙋‍♂️ . This is a very popular cue when stepping into a gym & it does have its place if doing a heavy deadlift or overhead squat. But that's about it! 💪 . Research even demonstrates this cue can cause issues such as Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, as it compresses the costoclavicular space 😳 . If you have pain in the muscles between your shoulder blade & spine (including you lot who "hold tension in their shoulders"), chances are you don't move your scapula the way they need to move 🤷‍♂️

How often do we train our ability to yield, to relax, and to utilize the fall to the earth? ⬇️. If all we ever focus on are the “pushes” then we don’t get to fall with gravity (something we’ve grown up with all our lives) and use this to load our actions optimally. ⬇️. In this movement, the Oscillatory Isometric Split Squat (I go into more depth on the implementation of this exercise in my book Speed Strength) you are tensing the muscles for a brief second (increasing vibration) then yielding and releasing. This ISO+release formula is an essential keystone of athletic movement and something that barrunning and I went in depth with on the podcast released today. This week we're taking on "butt wink." I did not name it... BUT! To put a definition to it, butt wink is the posterior pelvic tilt we see when an individual hits their end range of motion at the hips in a deep squat. And again in plain English, it's when you're in the very bottom position of a squat and your tail tucks rounding your low back. However you put it, If you're not familiar with it you may not be squatting regularly enough! Just sayin' 🤷🏻‍♂️. . So what's the big deal with butt wink and why do we need to spend time talking about it? . Well, to be honest, for a standard body weight squat with no extra load there really is no big deal! It's actually a natural part of our deep resting squat movement pattern. At some point, every single one of us, no matter how mobile we are, runs out of available range of motion at our hip capsule. . From a performance standpoint? It's got some negative implications, mainly the fact that it shows a lack of tension in the transition from lowering in to pushing back out of the bottom. More specifically, we lose torsion through the leg and torque at the hip. And when that's the case? Our core stability breaks down putting us at a higher risk of injury under that heavy load. . So much we do in teaching movement has to do with producing force... pushing... overcoming. How often do we train our ability to yield, to relax, and to utilize the fall to the earth? ⬇️. If all we ever focus on are the “pushes” then we don’t get to fall with gravity (something we’ve grown up with all our lives) and use this to load our actions optimally. ⬇️. In this movement, the Oscillatory Isometric Split Squat (I go into more depth on the implementation of this exercise in my book Speed Strength) you are tensing the muscles for a brief second (increasing vibration) then yielding and releasing. This ISO+release formula is an essential keystone of athletic movement and something that barrunning and I went in depth with on the podcast released today. What other factors in your training can you get control of before driving more volume? “5. Context matters. When a new client starts they often ask “how much should I train?”. The answer is quite often context dependent, however, I first find out where they currently are in regards to volume/ frequency of the main lifts. Most of our clients train 4 times a week, although if they have minimal training experience, they may be used to less. A beginner can almost certainly progress with 3 times a week training. If I sense that 4 times might be a stretch for them, I push them to start with 3 days. 3 completed days far outweighs 4 half-assed days. Always.” . Really like this variation of #bulgariansplitsquats and #singlelegrdl that I picked up from drrichardulm. You can band it from either direction. This one so happens to be set up for myself, I have a tendency to rock into ankle supination. This Exercise challenges the heck out of my Hamstrings. I mentioned doing this exercise to one of my mentors and she was like “I feel like my hammys are going to cramp up every time I perform this exercise.” And that’s because of the muscle recruitment that’s occurring here. Not only does this isolates the hamstring to contract but it gets other muscles involved because of the instability caused by the Physioball. It’s great because you don’t have to add weight at all.
